How It Works

This calculator offers two methods for estimating body fat percentage:

The U.S. Navy Method uses circumference measurements (waist, neck, and hip for women) along with height to estimate body fat. It was developed by the U.S. Navy as a practical field method and is reasonably accurate for most people. The formula uses logarithmic calculations based on the relationship between body circumferences and fat distribution.

The BMI-Based Method uses a formula derived from research correlating BMI with body fat percentage, accounting for age and gender. While less accurate than direct measurement methods, it provides a quick estimate when circumference measurements aren't available.

For the most accurate results, take measurements in the morning before eating, and measure at the same spots consistently. Neither method is as accurate as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, but they provide useful estimates for tracking changes over time.
