How It Works
The retirement calculator uses compound interest to project the future value of your current savings and monthly contributions over your working years.
Two formulas are combined: (1) FV = PV Γ (1+r)^n for your existing savings, and (2) FV = PMT Γ [(1+r)^n β 1] / r for monthly contributions. Both are then added to give your total projected balance at retirement.
Results are automatically localised for United States with pension scheme names, contribution limits, and local notes.
Worked example: $50,000 already saved plus $500 contributed monthly, growing at 6% per year compounded monthly, reaches roughly $800,000 after 30 years β about $300,000 from the initial savings compounding and $500,000 from the stream of contributions. Starting the same plan 10 years later reaches only about $390,000, which is why start date matters more than contribution size.
