How It Works

The income tax calculator uses the progressive (marginal) tax system used in most countries. Your income is split into tax brackets, and each portion is taxed at the rate applicable to that bracket β€” not your entire income at the highest rate.

For example, if you earn $50,000 in the US, only the portion above $47,150 is taxed at 22%. Everything below falls into lower brackets.

Results are automatically localised for South Africa with the correct tax brackets, currency, and local notes.

Worked example (US federal brackets): on $60,000 of taxable income, the first $11,600 is taxed at 10% ($1,160), income from $11,600 to $47,150 at 12% ($4,266), and the remaining $12,850 at 22% ($2,827) β€” total about $8,253. Your marginal rate is 22%, but your effective rate is only 13.8%. This is why a raise never reduces your take-home pay: only the dollars inside the higher bracket are taxed at the higher rate.
